Worldwide potential
Marnix Pool, CEO of the Knowledge Conversion Fund, attributes worldwide potential to Heeii.com. “Heeii ideally fits in the profile of our funds. Heeii already learns from the preferences of its users, but with these extensions it will also be able to bring you into contact with liked-minded people. Your personal page will show you which users share your interests and also what their favorite websites are. This browser plug-in acts as an automatic bookmarking tool, in certain aspects of its service, as it will look at what you do online and offer suggestions based on sites you visit. This is slightly similar to Reko. These suggestions are further reinforced by other Heeii members, bringing in a crowd-rules attitude towards efficient search. Suggestions show in your sidebar once you’ve installed the plug-in, showing a list of related results for you to check out, similar in function to BlogRovr. There are about ten results that show for this sidebar display.

There is no interaction for Heeii results, so you can’t indicate whether or not a suggestion was helpful or not. Heeii also won’t offer up a history of your web surfing behavior, but it must record your data at some level if it’s to reinforce the Heeii community. In all, Heeii isn’t much different from the Google suggestions that populate in your browser drop down box as you do a Google search. One of the things we have improved a lot is the speed of suggestions. In the upcoming release the suggestions should come to you almost as quick as the website you are watching. That’s pretty fast!

After the new release we will regularly add new features and functionality. We will keep you up to date here and on the forum.

One of the essential elements of Heeii is finding content that matches with your interest. This is quite a challenging task. Unsurprisingly a lot of research has been done in the fields of information retrieval and filtering. Lately we have looked at improving matching by going beyond textual comparisons only. Interesting stuff, for example consider the following:

The web can be considered as a hierarchical linked structure of documents. These links can tell us something about which documents are related. Google for example is also exploiting web page link structures, using PageRank to determine the importance of a document within a larger set. But there are other algorithms (HITS, Average-Clicks) as well. The most interesting thing about this technology is that importance and relevance of a page can be determined using only the link structure information. This means that without looking at the content of a page we can determine if a page is similar to another page.

Of course it gets really interesting when you combine the link structure with content analysis. The alpha version of Heeii has been helpful in providing some feedback. So thanks to everybody who has taken the time to tell us something about your experience!

In the mean time we have been very busy trying to improve the performance of Heeii. We’ve been looking into an open source indexing tool, Lucene, to give us more speed. The first results are very promising! We’ve managed to significantly increase the speed for our internal Heeii suggestion system. Finding a relevant page only takes milliseconds now. Besides speed we’re also looking at improving the quality of the suggestions, using minor and major tweaks. Expect to be surprised in the coming releases!

We have also been looking into Hadoop, a distributed file system, that will allow us to use and search a bigger index of pages. (Yes, we are secretly working towards indexing the complete Internet…) It also gives us better scalability, similar to Google’s filesystem, using cheap commodity hardware.

We are also working on an advertisement system that will allow advertisement next to the Heeii suggestions. It is similar to adSense, but we have some nifty ideas of our own.

But wait there’s more! We are also constantly thinking of new services Heeii could provide. For example, how about a widget for your blog that will suggest similar blogs? Or a community that will allow you to get in touch with similar people? Or a stream of interesting personalized rss feeds?
